What your body knows that words can't say

When words alone aren't enough

I've been seeing a therapist, on and off, since I was in my early 20s. I have always appreciated the space that therapy has provided me with to speak out loud my thoughts and narratives, and more so, the deep holding that I've received when going through tough moments in my life, and help me process deep-seated traumatic experiences.

But the truth is that the process never felt fully complete.

Talking it out is not enough—at least in my experience and many others' experiences (I know this from conversations that I've had with them).

Talking it out without connecting to my body... talking it out without connecting to my whole experience... left me feeling like my brain was stuck in a loop, and I didn't know how to make it stop.

The relief I felt after talking my heart out for one hour would quickly dissolve. More often than not, I would leave a therapy session with the beginnings of a pain flare-up. I would feel an immense tension building up in my neck and throat.

And so, when I began looking for a new therapist, it was important to find one who was also trained in somatics. I am so happy to report that not only I found someone with whom I am incredibly excited to be working, but with just two sessions with them, I can feel a world of a difference—I pause to listen to what my body has to say. I pause to absorb my own words. I am given the time and space to explore what needs to be heard, felt and seen. This invitation to connect with my body is allowing me to go even deeper into experiences, but in a way that fully honours what I need in the moment.

The missing piece: Our body's wisdom

What I've come to understand through this journey is that our bodies hold so much wisdom—wisdom that our thinking minds can't always access through words alone. When we're disconnected from our bodies, we're disconnected from a profound source of knowing.

You might recognize this experience in your own life—that feeling when you've talked and talked about something, analyzed it thoroughly, and yet something still feels unresolved. There's a lingering sense that something important remains just out of reach.

What I've discovered is that this "something" often lives in our bodies. It's in the tightness in your throat when you're holding back what needs to be said. It's in the heaviness in your chest when grief hasn't been fully honoured. It's in the tension in your shoulders when you're carrying more than you can hold.

Bringing this wisdom into my coaching practice

This personal journey has deeply informed the work I do at The Knowing Well. While my MindBody coaching is distinct from therapy (and doesn't replace mental health treatment), it creates a similar container where both your thoughts and your body's wisdom are honoured.

When we work together, you might notice how we pause to check in with your body. "What do you notice in your body as you speak about this dream?" or "Where do you feel that in your body right now?" These questions aren't just conversation fillers—they're invitations to access that well of knowing that lives within you.

Through Somatic Stress Release and MindBody Coaching, we create space for your whole experience—not just the parts that can be neatly expressed in words. We listen for the wisdom that might be speaking through sensations, through energy, through the subtle signals your body gives when something resonates deeply or when something feels misaligned.

The bridge between dreaming and doing

What I've found most profound is how connecting with our bodies creates a bridge between dreaming and doing. When we're disconnected from our bodies, our dreams can remain floating in our minds—beautiful but somehow unreachable. And our actions can feel mechanical, driven by "shoulds" rather than authentic desire.

But when we reconnect with the body, something magical happens. We gain access to our inner compass—that knowing that guides us toward what truly matters. We can feel in our bodies when we're moving in alignment with our dreams, and we can sense when we're veering off course.

This is why, in our work together, you'll be invited to notice not just what you think about your dreams and aspirations but what you feel in your body as you speak about them. What sensations arise? What feels expansive? What feels contracting? Your body already knows so much about what's right for you.

An invitation to wholeness

If you've been feeling stuck in a loop of thinking and analyzing, if you've been trying to figure everything out with your mind alone, I want to offer a gentle invitation:

There might be wisdom in your body that's waiting to be heard.

You might discover, as I have, that connecting with your body opens doors to insights, clarity, and forward movement that thinking alone cannot provide.

In our work together, you're welcome to bring your whole self—your thoughts, your feelings, your sensations, your dreams. There's room for all of it here.

If you're curious about how MindBody Coaching or Somatic Stress Release might support your journey, I'd love to connect. The well of knowing within you is deep and abundant—and sometimes, we just need a safe space to remember how to draw from it.
